While internationalization is becoming mainstream in higher education, it is also facing new challenges, not least a cultural and political backlash against cosmopolitism and migration. The global landscape of education and research is changing, Europe and North America are about to lose the dominant position they have held for two centuries. Will international student mobility consolidate or even decrease after decades of global growth? How will digitalization impact international cooperation and exchanges? Can we balance academic mobility and more permanent migration with the needs of developing countries? Will the “European University Networks” give a new impetus to internationalization, innovation and reform in higher education?

This session will present results from the EAIE Barometer regarding internationalisation at higher education institutions (HEIs) in Europe. Drawing on the survey responses from more than 2,000 practitioners at more than 1,000 HEIs spread across 45 countries in the European Higher Education Area. The report looks at nine factors that may serve as signposts on the road to successful internationalisation. The report "Signposts of success" analyses the commonalities between HEIs where practitioners are most positive about the current and future status of internationalisation.

Admission to higher education studies (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes) in the Czech Republic is contingent on satisfactory completion of the “maturitní zkouška” examination. If a student completed secondary education at a foreign school, how is the international academic credential assessed? How does a university admissions officer determine comparability to the Czech secondary leaving credential in terms of content, scope, and intent? Presenter will introduce the major principles of applied comparative education and the assessment process along with a practical case study review.

ČVUT: International recruitment is often seen as a goal-oriented task, with the goals segmented into categories such as “degree-students recruitment”, “exchange-students recruitment” or “international staff employment”. However, for these goals to work more effectively and meaningfully, they should fit together like pieces of a pipeline. Some students are more reluctant to enrol in foreign degree programmes unless they have previously visited the country or experienced its educational system. This is especially true for American students (used as a case study in this presentation). However, if the students know someone familiar with the Czech Republic, if they have visited the country themselves, attended a short academic programme or been here on a student exchange, they are more likely to consider enrolling to a full degree programme, assuming their experience was positive. Once they earn a degree from a Czech university they are much more likely to be interested in a position at the university. It is therefore important to create a step-by-step process for international student recruitment, starting with a range of short-term programmes (2-4 weeks), which would allow students to test the waters with minimal risk. Maintaining contact and following-up with these “engaged” students about future study opportunities in the Czech Republic is critical. Research-oriented students, however, require different approach, which includes involvement in projects, groups and organizations as well as focus on the university´s visibility. UP: The issue of recruiting international students has been high on the agenda of most higher education institutions in Central Europe. The common approach includes working with agencies, participating in student fairs, online marketing, and creating attractive website content. However, our experience has shown that offering a unique university experience combined with cultural and social engagement may inspire foreign students to eventually apply for a degree programme.

Pro její vznik se spojila Univerzita Karlova, Heidelberg University, Sorbonne University, University of Copenhagen, University of Milan a University of Warsaw.

Can you imagine how the Erasmus administration would look like if you could exchange data electronically and safely with every university in EU? Nearly 1,000 universities in Europe are already part of this digital ecosystem called Erasmus without Paper (EWP). Efforts are now underway to expand it to around 5,000, as well as to enable other digital services to run on the EWP infrastructure. Benefits of the digital transformation will be discussed alongside the challenges to achieve a paperless administration of student mobility.

Počet zahraničních výjezdů a s nimi spojená administrativní zátěž roste, přestože současný trend digitalizace odsouvá klasické papírování do propadliště dějin.

With the rise of interest from Czech universities to enroll American students, we must look for ways to support students from a variety of ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientation. Both administrators and academics work closely with all incoming students, and require the tools to support these students during their studies in the Czech Republic. With the guidance of Diversity Abroad, the leading U.S. organization that provides resources and support for these underserved student populations who are interested in global opportunities, will provide an overview of “diversity” in the US context and will present information with Charles University administrators and students to adapt current practices in the Czech Republic to support these students.

As an active stakeholder organisation, bringing together national-level agencies working towards furthering the internationalisation of their higher education systems, the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) provides an active voice in the current debate around the growing need to increase inclusion in the internationalisation of higher education (activities) in general, and in the Erasmus 2021-2027 programme, in particular. This session will address, based on ACA’s work in this area, necessary actions to increase and widen inclusion in internationalisation at home and internationalisation abroad activities, as well as to narrow the gap between the two. The participants will be invited to actively contribute, by reflecting on and sharing specific related situation from their own institutional and national contexts.

Blok bude uzavřen debatou nad tím, jakou roli by univerzita měla hrát při řešení nenadálých událostí ohrožující bezpečnost svých i zahraničních studentů a zaměstnanců.

What are good reasons to continue with internationalisation of Higher Education Institutions and how to adapt existing strategies? How to set new standards for linking internationalisation and digitalisation? What role does the “third mission” of universities and their intended impact on society play? What chances can the new “European Universities” offer in that regard? Based on the European/German perspective and the applicability to Czech universities these questions, new trends as well as new funding programmes will be presented and discussed.

Přednášející:
Anja Schnabel, Head of Section, DAAD

Many international students come to Germany, but unfortunately up to one third of them drops out before graduating. The upcoming generation of students likes comfortable and easy ways of getting information, loves watching videos more then reading texts. How can we improve explaining a complex university system so that young students can make a better choice without boring them? Does user-generated content help us to guide them? Is digitalization the key to an even better preparation, or is a personal approach the way to get them? The session will present good practices of the campaign „Study in Germany – Land of Ideas“ and the information work of the DAAD to meet these challenges. There will be room for discussion how the DAAD experiences may be useful for Czech universities.

Uwe Brandenburg, Director, The Global Impact Institute

The Systemic University Change Towards Internationalisation (SUCTI) project aims at empowering administrative staff by providing them with knowledge and skills related to their university’s internationalisation process. Administrative staff represent the backbone of universities, and if they are convinced of the importance and added value of internationalisation they can become genuine change agents. In this way, they can make a key contribution to the overall objective of the project which is to transform the internal mindset of universities and enable them to become truly internationalised institutions. SUCTI is a three-year initiative approved for funding under the European Commission’s Erasmus+ KA2 Strategic Partnerships for higher education. The project is coordinated by the URV, Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain).

Industry 4.0 - robotics, digitalization, automation, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, block chain, internet of things and new technologies – the 21st century has been the age of new opportunities and rapid changes. Globalization, communication systems and information technology change the way people communicate, cooperate and work. In the context of the upcoming 4th industrial revolution, qualitative changes in the job market structure in global context are also expected. What the new technology brings to the employers? How has the requirements and expectation of the global companies changed? What do we understand under the Future Work Skills 2020? And how shall the higher education institution reflect on these new job markets requirements? Education at macro as well as micro level needs to acknowledge this reality, and seek new, functional approaches to teaching and learning. School graduates face an increased demand on advanced skills and key competences. This presentation will introduce the 21st century employees’ requirements and models for teaching that tackles this challenge helping the students develop their key competences for professional success.
